 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
1. A clean, representative sample of the supporting water should be obtained by means of a sampling can or other suitably designed sampling apparatus. A sample of at least 1 liter will help to ensure that the temperature and density do not change unduly between the collection of the sample and taking of the readings. The depth of water in the container must be sufficient to allow at least 25mm clearance between the bottom of the hydrometer and the bottom of the hydrometer and the bottom of the container. The internal diameter of the container or jar should be at least 50 mm.
2. The number of samples to be taken, also at which depths and at which positions outside the vessel they should be taken, may be important according to the circumstances.
3. Readings may be taken by lowering the hydrometer into a suitably shaped sampling apparatus or by transferring the water to a suitable glass test jar. If a metal or other non-transparent container is used for taking readings, ensure that it is full to the brim. If a glass test jar is used, it should preferably be rinsed first, so as to avoid undue temperature changes. The container or test jar should be shielded from draughts, which may affect the readings.
4. The reading must be taken in the sampling apparatus or glass test jar as rapidly as possible Undue delay in taking the reading could result in temperature changes leading to inaccurate results. In case of doubt, a repeat sample should be taken in order to verify the first observation
5. Ensure that the stem of the hydrometer and the surface of the water sample is free from grease and oil since the accuracy of the readings could be adversely affected
6. Hold the hydrometer vertically by the top of the stem and gently lower it into the water sample until it floats freely
7. Take the hydrometer reading where the level liquid surface meets the graduated scale.

CORRECTIONS TO HYDROMETER READING
1. For ydrometer the appropriate corrections should be applied.
2. For most Draft Survey purposes, no further corrections to the readings are needed.
Reading is most correct when the glass hydrometer is used at a temperature of 15°C. If immersed in water at temperatures higher or lower than 15°C, the instrument will expand or contract so that, for precise laboratory work, a small correction would be applicable However, for Draft Survey work, it should be noted that the ship itself will normally expand or contract according to the temperature of the water in which it is rating. The corrections required to compensate for these changes in volume are of opposite signs and tend to compensate for each other. As it is not practicable to calculate any temperature corrections for the ship, for most Draft Survey purposes no correction should be applied for the expansion or contraction of the hydrometer glass

Mechanism of Action

Maleic polymers are known to be excellent calcium carbonate inhibitors and crystal modifiers but many exhibit only fair calcium sulfate deposit control. A new polymer, Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx, has been developed to overcome this problem. Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx contains maleic polymer and a unique combination of other functionalities to provide both superior calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate inhibition, also outperforming HEDP. Preventing calcium sulfate scale is important in water systems treated with sulfuric acid for pH control or if using seawater or briny waters. Also removing sulfur oxide gases in scrubbing systems can result in sulfur containing calcium deposits.

Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx  polymer inhibits scale buildup on surfaces through at least three mechanisms:
 

  • Solubility enhancement or threshold effect, which reduces precipitation of low solubility inorganic salts.
  • Crystal modification, which deforms the growing inorganic salt crystals to give small, irregular, readily fractured crystal that do not adhere well to surfaces.
  • Dispersing activity, which prevents precipitated crystals or other inorganic particles from agglomerating and depositing on surfaces.

Performance Advantages with  Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX Polymer Scale Inhibitor

The following tables compare the product efficacy of  Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx  polymer with other scale control agents for inhibiting calcium salts and dispersing solids. The higher the performance value (% inhibition or NTU), the better the scale inhibitor and dispersant. Test conditions represent various salt levels found in cycled cooling water.

Calcium Carbonate Inhibition :

Polymers were tested for preventing the precipitation of calcium carbonate under highly stressed conditions. The "High Salt" conditions used for these evaluations contain chloride levels typical of seawater or very briny waters. The "High Calcium" conditions contain calcium and carbonate levels typical of highly cycled cooling water. In Table 1,  Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx  provided excellent performance for inhibiting calcium carbonate under both test conditions. Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx , HEDP and polymaleic acid were the best inhibitors in the "High Salt" test while  Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx and pAA were the best inhibitors in the "High Calcium" test. Note that a competitive polymer, V1, performed poorly in
the "High Salt" test for inhibiting calcium carbonate.

Calcium Sulfate Inhibition : 

Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX  is also an excellent calcium sulfate inhibitor as demonstrated in Table 2. Many conditions were evaluated at different temperatures, pH and polymer levels. Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX provided excellent performance similar to pAA in the longer term tests but was the best performer for inhibiting calcium sulfate in once-thru conditions where induction time is under an hour. Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX excelled over polymaleic acid and HEDP for inhibiting calcium sulfate.

Properties of Acetic Acid
Even though ethanoic acid is considered to be a weak acid, in its concentrated form, it possesses strong corrosive powers and can even attack the human skin if exposed to it. Some general properties of acetic acid are listed below.
Ethanoic acid appears to be a colourless liquid and has a pungent smell.
At STP, the melting and boiling points of ethanoic acid are 289K and 391K respectively.
The molar mass of acetic acid is 60.052 g/mol and its density in the liquid form is 1.049 g.cm-3.
The acid dissociation constant (pKa) of ethanoic acid in a solution of water is 4.76.
The conjugate base of acetic acid is acetate, given by CH3COO–.
The pH of an ethanoic acid solution of 1.0M concentration is 2.4, which implies that it does not dissociate completely.
In its liquid form, acetic acid is a polar, protic solvent, with a dielectric constant of 6.2.
 

Uses of Acetic acid

VINEGAR
It's obvious this list was always going to start with Vinegar as it is most closely associated with this product. Vinegar consists of typically 5-20% acetic acid with the level of dilution being indicative of the strength (known as grain strength).Acetic acid is present in all types of vinegar from weaker table vinegar through to pickling varieties and more concentrated products.Usually the acetic acid is produced by the fermentation of ethanol or sugars by acetic acid bacteria.

AS A MONOMER OF VINYL ACETATE
The primary use of acetic acid is the production of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM). In 2008, this application was estimated to consume a third of the world's production of acetic acid. The reaction consists of ethylene and acetic acid with oxygen over a palladium catalyst, conducted in the gas phase.
Vinyl acetate is an industrial chemical that is produced in large amounts. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a sweet, fruity smell. It is very flammable and may be ignited by heat, sparks, or flames. Vinyl acetate is used to make other industrial chemicals. These chemicals are used mainly to make glues for the packaging and building industries. They are also used to make paints, textiles, and paper. Vinyl acetate is also used as a coating in plastic films for food packaging and as a modifier of food starch.
AS A SOLVENT IN NON AQUEOUS TITRATION
The organic acids and bases are insoluble in water. These are extremely weak and cannot be analysed using normal titrimetric methods. Hence the non-aqueous titrimetric method is used. The main principle involved in the non-aqueous titrimetric method is the samples are dissolved in the non-aqueous solvents.
This type of competition provided by water towards weak bases or weak acids makes it difficult to detect the end point of the titration. Therefore, these substances which have very sharp end points when titrated in aqueous solutions due to their weakly basic or weakly acidic nature generally need to be titrated in non aqueous solvents
FORMATION OF ACETIC ANHYDRIDE
The product of the condensation of two molecules of acetic acid is acetic anhydride. The worldwide production of acetic anhydride is a major application, and uses approximately 25% to 30% of the global production of acetic acid. The main process involves dehydration of acetic acid to give ketene at 700–750 °C. Ketene is thereafter reacted with acetic acid to obtain the anhydride
As indicated by its organic chemistry, acetic anhydride is mainly used for acetylations leading to commercially significant materials. Its largest application is for the conversion of cellulose to cellulose acetate, which is a component of photographic film and other coated materials, and is used in the manufacture of cigarette filters. Similarly it is used in the production of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), which is prepared by the acetylation of salicylic acid.[19] It is also used as a wood preservative via autoclave impregnation to make a longer-lasting timber.

ACETIC ACID FOR WOUND CARE
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a significant cause of burn wound infections and, skin and soft tissue infections. The antiseptic management is an integral part of the management of wound infections and is essential to control wound infection. Although commonly used, concerns have been raised.Available experimental data suggest that many commonly used antiseptic agents may be toxic to the cells involved in wound healing process and may affect the process of normal tissue repair. In view of this, the present review summarized the acetic acid is commonly used as a substitute for antiseptics to control pseudomonal wound infections with special reference to acetic acid and their role in the process of wound healing. Acetic acid is to be kept in mind as one of the alternatives when infection is caused by multiple antibiotic resistant strains of P. aeruginosa. At a time when bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a matter of increasing concern, the value of topical agents such as acetic acid should not be forgotten.
ACETIC ACID AS A BUFFER
Buffer solutions resist a change in pH when small amounts of a strong acid or a strong base are added.A solution of acetic acid and sodium acetate is an example of buffer. A  mixture of acetic acid and sodium acetate is acidic because the Ka of acetic acid is greater than the Kb of its conjugate base acetate. It is a buffer because it contains both the weak acid and its salt. Hence, it acts to keep the hydronium ion concentration (and the pH) almost constant by the addition of either a small amount of a strong acid or a strong base.
ACETIC ACID AS A HERBICIDE
Vinegar has been touted as an effective weed killer. It is a promising broad-spectrum herbicide. Acetic acid is used in a variety of turfgrass and landscape renovation projects, such as the removal of an existing lawn area to install new sod or seed, the removal of a lawn for other landscaping projects, or general weed management in paved and graveled areas. Acetic acid has the ability to break the bonds of the harmful proteins present in the weeds due to which there is a molecular change in the configration of the weed and it is rendered harmless.
ACETIC ACID AS A DESCALER
Acetic acid has the ability to remove limescale from metal surfaces in contact with hot water such as in boiler, water heater and kettles. The fact that acetic acid has a low pH it reacts with alkaline carbobnate compounds present in scale, producing carbon dioxide and soluble salt. Redkleen RX 400 Radiator Flush Cleaner

Nulon R 40, Reedkleen RX400 Radiator flush and clean

Application: 

Use Redkleen RX 400 ( Radiator Flush & Clean) as a complete cooling system flush to remove insulating built-up sludge and residue before changing coolant in any cooling system. This procedure will ensure optimum heat transfer and efficiency of the entire cooling system. Whenever draining a cooling system or changing brands of coolant it is always recommended to clean the system with Redkleen RX 400.

Use Redkleen RX 400 before removing a radiator from a vehicle for reconditioning. Clean the entire system with Redkleen RX 400 so when the radiator is reinstalled, the core will not be contaminated with scale and residue from the rest of the system.

Using Procedure: 

Directions for use
Note: Exercise caution when removing radiator caps. Release pressure slowly to avoid scalding.
 

  • Turn on the heater and add required amount of RX 400 to a warm radiator.
  • Run the engine for 20 minutes minimum (no longer than 1 hour). Stop the engine and allow it to cool.
  • Drain the system by removing the bottom radiator hose or opening the drain cock. Thoroughly flush and rinse out all old coolant. Replace the hose or close the drain cock.
  • Add RXSOL 4001  corrosion inhibitor and clean, soft or demineralised water, or
  • Where specified, use anti-freeze/anti-boil coolant (such as RXSOL-4004 ultra Coolant).
  • Start the engine, check for leaks and top up as necessary.
     

Dose Rates

  • All cars and light commercials - add 500 ml
  • For trucks, tractors and large engines - add 500 ml for every 6 litres (quarts) of cooling system capacity.
