Mechanism of Action

Maleic polymers are known to be excellent calcium carbonate inhibitors and crystal modifiers but many exhibit only fair calcium sulfate deposit control. A new polymer, Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx, has been developed to overcome this problem. Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx contains maleic polymer and a unique combination of other functionalities to provide both superior calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate inhibition, also outperforming HEDP. Preventing calcium sulfate scale is important in water systems treated with sulfuric acid for pH control or if using seawater or briny waters. Also removing sulfur oxide gases in scrubbing systems can result in sulfur containing calcium deposits.

Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx  polymer inhibits scale buildup on surfaces through at least three mechanisms:
 

  • Solubility enhancement or threshold effect, which reduces precipitation of low solubility inorganic salts.
  • Crystal modification, which deforms the growing inorganic salt crystals to give small, irregular, readily fractured crystal that do not adhere well to surfaces.
  • Dispersing activity, which prevents precipitated crystals or other inorganic particles from agglomerating and depositing on surfaces.

Performance Advantages with  Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX Polymer Scale Inhibitor

The following tables compare the product efficacy of  Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx  polymer with other scale control agents for inhibiting calcium salts and dispersing solids. The higher the performance value (% inhibition or NTU), the better the scale inhibitor and dispersant. Test conditions represent various salt levels found in cycled cooling water.

Calcium Carbonate Inhibition :

Polymers were tested for preventing the precipitation of calcium carbonate under highly stressed conditions. The "High Salt" conditions used for these evaluations contain chloride levels typical of seawater or very briny waters. The "High Calcium" conditions contain calcium and carbonate levels typical of highly cycled cooling water. In Table 1,  Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx  provided excellent performance for inhibiting calcium carbonate under both test conditions. Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx , HEDP and polymaleic acid were the best inhibitors in the "High Salt" test while  Scale Inhibitor 4300 Rx and pAA were the best inhibitors in the "High Calcium" test. Note that a competitive polymer, V1, performed poorly in
the "High Salt" test for inhibiting calcium carbonate.

Calcium Sulfate Inhibition : 

Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX  is also an excellent calcium sulfate inhibitor as demonstrated in Table 2. Many conditions were evaluated at different temperatures, pH and polymer levels. Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX provided excellent performance similar to pAA in the longer term tests but was the best performer for inhibiting calcium sulfate in once-thru conditions where induction time is under an hour. Scale Inhibitor 4300 RX excelled over polymaleic acid and HEDP for inhibiting calcium sulfate.

Required Materials :::

1) Transparent Polythene bags of a suitable size to fit over the head of the cylinder. For eg. for 5.5" diameter cylinder the bag size is approximately:- 9" open width x 12" length. And For a 4" diameter cylinder, bag size is approximately 6.5" open width x 12" length. And For a 3.5" diameter cylinder, bag size is approximately 5.75" open width x 12" length.

 

2) Elastic bands of a suitable size to tighten Polythene Bag on Cylinder Head to Make sure there are no air gaps in the seal.

 

3) A measuring cylinder, 25 ml capacity.

4) Test Solution -  RXSOL-66-6201-500, The solution shall be stored in a cool place in dark coloured glass bottles with a tight fitting screw cap. If so stored the shelf life is approximately 12 MONTHS.

Using Procedure: 

Testing Method :
First of all clean valve and shoulder of the cylinder  to make sure connecting portion are free from dust and other contaminants by carefully wiping using a clean, dry cloth. Remove the dust cap to clean the valve then replace the cap loosely.
 

Then Lay down the cylinder under test on its side in a rack, such that the valve end is protruding.

 

Testing procedure begin with by Using measuring cylinder to take 25 ml of the RXSOL-66-6201-500 test solution into a polythene bag, Pl. be note A control quantities of sample is necessary, which is made by introducing 25 ml of test solution. Then follow these step :::

 

1) Attach the open end of the bag over the valve head and attach it to the cylinder body. Tighten Polythene bags using one or more elastic bands. Make sure there are no air gaps in the seal. And also try to hang polythene bag minimum 20 cm off the valve end of the cylinder with the test solution in one corner.

 

2) Maintain the test for a period of not less than 4 hours and not more than 4.5 hours.

 

                            

Final Observations

1) The presence of a leak of carbon dioxide from the cylinder will cause the pink colour to the test solution to be lost and the test solution will become water white.

 

2) If no colour change is observed there is no leak of gas from cylinder.

Directions for use
Note: Exercise caution when removing radiator caps. Release pressure slowly to avoid scalding.
 

  • Turn on the heater and add required amount of RX 400 to a warm radiator.
  • Run the engine for 20 minutes minimum (no longer than 1 hour). Stop the engine and allow it to cool.
  • Drain the system by removing the bottom radiator hose or opening the drain cock. Thoroughly flush and rinse out all old coolant. Replace the hose or close the drain cock.
  • Add RXSOL 4001  corrosion inhibitor and clean, soft or demineralised water, or
  • Where specified, use anti-freeze/anti-boil coolant (such as RXSOL-4004 ultra Coolant).
  • Start the engine, check for leaks and top up as necessary.

  • All cars and light commercials - add 500 ml
  • For trucks, tractors and large engines - add 500 ml for every 6 litres (quarts) of cooling system capacity.
