Different Alkalinity testing kits from RxMarine

To measure the alkaline level in natural waters, information about alkalinity is very necessary. Alkalinity is the ability to neutralize an acid or inactivate a known quantity of standard acids. Due to human disturbances and imbalance in nature, there can be long-term changes in the alkalinity level of streams and rivers. It is important to measure alkalinity only by determining the ability to neutralize acidic pollution coming from wastewater or rainfall. It can be measured by a most common method-titration in which drop count technique or burette is used.

Reason behind the increase in alkalinity level

There are many commonly occurring materials like carbonate, hydroxides, bicarbonates and phosphates found in natural water due to various activities performed by humans or animals and become one of the main reasons behind the increase in alkalinity level. One has to maintain between the pH level and alkalinity level in order to protect bottom dwelling invertebrates and freshwater fishes.

P-Alkalinity Test: This is used to test alkalinity by taking samples of hydroxides and carbonates. At the time of test, the boiler gets rupture due to the caustic content present in the acid. Take a marked test tube and add 1-2 drops of RXSOL TK 7 by stirring it in 10ml of water. Keep on stirring and if the sample turns pink or red in colour, alkalinity test is positive and if colourless, alkalinity test is negative. In case of positive condition, add RXSOL TK 9 by counting drop by drop and mix continuously with rod until sample turns to colourless.

M-Alkalinity Test: This is used to test alkalinity by taking small samples of bicarbonates and carbonic acids. During the test, there are chances against the rupture of boiler due to steam condensate lines and carbonic acid present in the sample. Take a marked test tube and add 2-3 drops of RXSOL TK 8 by stirring it in 10ml of water. Keep on stirring and if the sample turns bluish green, alkalinity test is positive and if colourless, alkalinity test is negative. In case of positive condition, add RXSOL TK 9 by counting drop by drop and mix continuously with rod until sample turns to light reddish pink colour.

Total Alkalinity Test: By total alkalinity test, we mean, the total of P Alkalinity Value (X) and M Alkalinity Value (Y). Take a marked test tube and add 2-3 drops of RXSOL TK 7 by stirring it in 10ml of water. Keep on stirring and if the sample turns red/pink (indicates the presence of p-alkalinity) then continue with the 3rd step otherwise if colourless, record the value of p-alkalinity to 0 and proceed to step 4. Add RXSOL TK 9 by counting drop by drop and mix continuously with rod until the colour gets disappear. Add 2-3 drops of RXSOL TK 8 and mix continuously with rod until the colour gets bluish green. Add RXSOL TK 9 by counting drop by drop and mix continuously with rod until light reddish pink colour appears.
