Bilge Coat (Sulphuric Acid Neutralizer)
The term ‘Bilge’ refers to the rounded portion of a ship which is actually the lowest part in the ship’s hull. This part is subjected to acidic water and that destroys the durability of the ship. RXSOL Bilge Coat is a highly effective solution which is alkaline in nature for the Binge Line and protects well during the carrying of cargo like Sulphur. The product neutralizes acids formed mainly by sulphur.
The Bilge coat has more protective action that any alkaline neutralizer. The bilge coat is done to prevent the acids from attacking the material. The ship bilge which is subjected to various types of acids mainly sulphuric acid is neutralized by the bilge coat.
The solution has a mechanism that controls the rusting and corrosion by keeping the pH level of the acidic water constant. A concentrated fluid, this can be diluted as per requirement and used for protection against rust and corrosion. The bilge of the ship is protected from harmful sulphuric acid by the bilge coat which protects it. It has a long shelf life. It prevents the accumulation of acidic bilge water which would prove detrimental for the ship. It also provides additional protection of the ship against deposition of mineral scale, cavitation-erosion and also electrolytes.
Bilge Coating is done prior to the journey and after the journey. No bad and detrimental effects on non-metallic substances like glass gaskets, hoses, pipes, seals etc. Alkaline solution used for Bilge lines and wells protects them from the harmful sulphuric acid formed especially if the cargo being carried has high quantities of sulphur. The ratio of application of the coat is 1:23 that is for every 1 part of Bilge water or acidic water neutralizer, there are 23 parts of water. HANDYMAX requires 100 liters solution per week and PANAMAX requires 125 liters solution.
As far as dosage is concerned, Firstly a clean plastic tank or drum is taken which is then filled with approximately 92 liters of water and 4 liters of Bilge Coat. It is stirred well and is now ready to use. Then the mixture is applied to the whole bilge area, this will protect the ship during its journey. In addition, 15 to 20 liters of the Bilge Coat Solution is poured directly into each hold surrounding pipe which is present on the deck.
Talking about the advantages, it protects the ship bilge against acidic water. It reduces the maintenance costs and overhead costs associated with it. It helps in prolonging the life of the machinery as it inhibits corrosion and scale. Moreover, it is environment friendly, thus no harm done on the environment. Also, it is non- staining and does not leave a mark. It is easy to transport and low quantity can make a high concentration which makes it economical and cheap. As the Bilge Coat comes in liquid state, it is easier to maintain and transport than solid alkaline materials which does the same function.
Contamination:-
In case of any contamination with eyes or skin or any other part, medical attention must be seeked out but before that there are certain procedures-
- Eyes- Washing the affected part with copious amounts of water for about 15 minutes then seeking medical attention.
- Skin- Wash the contaminated area with clean water and remove contaminated clothing.
- Inhalation- Get fresh air and if breathing seems to be irregular it is best to seek help.
- Ingestion- Induce vomiting if required to get the material out of the stomach, obtain immediate medical help and don’t try to feed anything to the unconscious person.
