Abstract. Amyl alcohol describes any saturated aliphatic alcohol containing five carbon atoms. This class consists of three pentanols, four substituted butanols, and a disubstituted propanol, ie, eight structural isomers C5H12O: four primary, three secondary, and one tertiary alcohol.
Amyl alcohol is used as a solvent and in esterification, by which is produced amyl acetate and other important products. The name amyl alcohol without further specification applies to the normal (straight-chain) form, 1-pentanol.
Pentan-3-ol is a secondary alcohol that is pentane substituted at position 3 by a hydroxy group. It has a role as a pheromone and a biomarker. It is a secondary alcohol and a pentanol.
