Bromoform may form when chlorine reacts with

 other naturally occurring substances in water, such as decomposing plant material.

Bromoform is a colorless liquid with a sweet, Chloroform-like odor. 

It is used in making organic chemicals, as a solvent for waxes, greases and oils, and as a flotation agent in mineral separation.
