Calamine is an anti-itch medicine that works by causing a cooling sensation as it evaporates on your skin. Calamine also dries oozing or weeping from minor skin irritation.
Calamine lotion is an effective treatment for the itching and inflammation that can occur with minor skin conditions, such as acne, sunburn, and certain rashes. It can relieve these symptoms and has minimal side effects. However, calamine lotion does not treat the underlying cause of recurring conditions, such as acne.
The active ingredient in calamine lotion is a combination of zinc oxide and 0.5% iron (ferric) oxide. The iron oxide gives it its identifying pink color.
